Did Baku Reopen the 2026 F1 Title Fight?

George Russell cut Kimi Antonelli's championship lead from 81 points to 66 in Baku. The result renewed the pressure without turning the title race into a close contest.

George Russell's Azerbaijan Grand Prix victory put the 2026 drivers' championship back under pressure, but it did not make the contest close. Russell won from pole while Kimi Antonelli recovered from 16th to fifth. That combination reduced Antonelli's lead from 81 points to 66: a meaningful 15-point swing, with a large advantage still intact.

The useful distinction is between momentum and position. Baku gave Russell his strongest possible result and exposed Antonelli to a difficult weekend. It also showed why Antonelli's recovery mattered. Finishing fifth prevented one qualifying error from becoming a much larger championship loss.

The Safety Cars changed the race Russell was controlling

Russell's win was not created by the late neutralisations. Before the first Safety Car, the FIA race report records that he had stretched his advantage to almost 10 seconds around halfway. He had converted pole into the lead and controlled the first phase while Oscar Piastri defended from the two Red Bulls.

Alex Albon's crash on lap 30 brought out the first Safety Car. The leaders pitted under the neutralisation and Russell retained the lead, but his time advantage disappeared. At the restart, Max Verstappen passed Piastri for second. A collision involving the two Alpines and Lando Norris then produced another Safety Car, giving Russell a second restart to manage with Verstappen directly behind.

That is the race's clearest turning point: not a change of leader, but the removal of the cushion Russell had built. He still had to execute both restarts and defend the position after the field was compressed. Verstappen finished only 0.196 seconds behind after 51 laps.

Russell told the FIA post-race press conference that he lost turbo response after lifting for a late yellow flag. That is his attributed explanation for why the finish became so close; the classification establishes the margin, not the underlying technical cause.

The championship swing was exactly 15 points

The official race classification awarded Russell 25 points for first and Antonelli 10 for fifth. The difference is 15 points, matching the change from an 81-point pre-race gap to 66 afterwards.

The standings checked on September 28 list Antonelli on 302 and Russell on 236. Baku therefore removed about 18.5% of Russell's pre-race deficit: 15 divided by 81. That is enough to change the tone of the contest, but not enough to describe the championship as reset.

One weekend cannot establish the pattern for the remaining circuits. Russell maximised Baku; repeating that result would still require later races to produce further swings. Antonelli remains able to protect a substantial lead by finishing consistently even when Russell wins.

Antonelli's fifth place was effective damage limitation

Antonelli's weekend could have cost much more. He hit the wall in Q1, started 16th and initially lost ground. The two Safety Cars closed the field, and the Mercedes account says he used the interruptions and passing opportunities to reach fifth.

Antonelli himself called the race damage limitation in Formula 1's post-race report. That description fits the points outcome. Fifth did not answer Russell's victory, but it kept the loss to 15 rather than allowing a non-score to create a far larger change.

It would be a mistake to turn that recovery into proof that Antonelli had the same pace as Russell. The two drivers began in very different track positions and ran different races. The result supports a narrower conclusion: Antonelli converted a compromised weekend into 10 points and retained a 66-point lead.

Baku raised the pressure without reversing the title picture

Baku changed the pressure, not the underlying order. Russell now needs further weekends that produce gains; Antonelli still has room to limit losses while leading by 66. The verified result supports renewed competition, not a title reversal. Whether the championship truly swings depends on the races that follow.
