Context and weekend notes
Qatar arrived with the championship at its most complicated point of the season. McLaren still held both tables, but Las Vegas had turned the final stretch volatile again. A sprint weekend at Losail meant there were extra points available for anyone capable of seizing momentum quickly.
Sprint and qualifying summary
Piastri won the sprint in 26:51.033 ahead of Russell and Norris, then followed it by taking pole with a 1:19.387. Norris qualified second and Verstappen third. On paper that should have been the perfect recovery weekend for McLaren's intra-team campaign, because Piastri started the event by scoring and controlling the front of the grid.
Race key events
Verstappen won the grand prix in 1:24:38.241, with Piastri second and Sainz third for Williams. Piastri also set fastest lap in 1:22.996. Qatar therefore became one of the season's most consequential split weekends: McLaren took valuable sprint points and a strong race podium, but Verstappen still captured the main trophy and kept the drivers' title unsettled heading to the finale.

Technical/strategy highlights
Losail again placed a premium on high-speed balance, tyre care, and repeatable traction through long-radius corners, and the competitive picture shifted between sprint and grand prix conditions. McLaren remained extremely strong over the whole event, yet Red Bull's win underlined how finely balanced the title run-in had become whenever the weekend moved even slightly away from a clean McLaren script.
Post-race and impact
After Round 23, Norris led the drivers' standings on 408 points, Verstappen had surged to 396, and Piastri sat on 392. McLaren climbed to 800 constructors' points, with Mercedes on 459 and Red Bull on 426. Qatar therefore sent the season to Abu Dhabi with the headline exactly where Formula 1 would want it: open enough to matter, but still tilted toward the team that had been strongest all year.
