Context and weekend notes

Abu Dhabi arrived with the 2025 drivers' title still open and with McLaren on the edge of converting a season of consistency into both championships. Norris led, Verstappen still had a path, and Piastri lingered close enough to keep the arithmetic alive. That meant Yas Marina became less about isolated race pace and more about who could handle a season's worth of pressure in one final evening.

Qualifying summary

Verstappen took pole with a 1:22.207, ahead of Norris and Piastri. That front three perfectly captured the championship picture: Red Bull still had the single-lap threat, but McLaren had both cars close enough to dictate the broader terms of the finale. Verstappen could win the race, yet he still needed the standings to move with him.

Race key events

Verstappen won the finale in 1:26:07.469, with Piastri second and Norris third. Leclerc set fastest lap in 1:26.725. Abu Dhabi therefore produced the classic split ending to a title season: Verstappen left with the race victory, but Norris left with the bigger prize by scoring enough points to secure the drivers' championship.

Technical/strategy highlights

Yas Marina rewarded clean traction, tidy rear stability, and the ability to sequence the final sector without tyre temperature drifting away. Red Bull executed that best over a single race distance, but McLaren's two-car presence near the front remained the defining structural advantage of the season: when one driver could not win, the other was still there to protect the championship objective.

Post-race and impact

After Round 24, Norris finished the season as drivers' champion on 423 points, just ahead of Verstappen on 421, with Piastri third on 410. McLaren sealed the constructors' championship on 833 points, ahead of Mercedes on 469 and Red Bull on 451. Abu Dhabi therefore confirmed the shape of 2025 in full: Verstappen remained fiercely dangerous, but McLaren's season-long depth and Norris' late composure proved decisive.
