Context and weekend notes
Miami arrived as the most information-rich weekend of 2026 so far. It was the first Sprint round after the regulation refinements announced on April 23, the first real test of whether Mercedes' early dominance travelled to a fundamentally different circuit, and the weekend where McLaren brought a chassis-level upgrade described by team principal Andrea Stella as a "completely new car." The five-week gap between Japan and Miami gave teams additional development time, and several arrived with significant updates.
Sprint Qualifying
Lando Norris took Sprint pole for McLaren, validating the team's upgrade package. Kimi Antonelli qualified P2 but described it as a "messy session for Mercedes." Max Verstappen qualified P5, his best Sprint Qualifying of 2026, while both Alpine drivers reached SQ3. Alexander Albon received a track-limits penalty dropping him to P19.

Sprint Race
Norris converted pole into Sprint victory, the first Sprint win for McLaren in 2026, with Oscar Piastri completing a McLaren one-two. The McLaren's improved traction was visible through the Turn 1-3 complex and the Turn 14-15 chicane. Antonelli dropped from P2 to P4 at the start and crossed the line fourth, but a five-second track-limits penalty moved him to P6 in the final classification. Nico Hulkenberg's Audi caught fire on the way to the grid, ending his Sprint before it began. The "yo-yo racing" dynamic that characterized the opening rounds was less visible, suggesting the regulation refinements are having their intended effect.

Qualifying
Kimi Antonelli took pole position with a 1:27.798, edging out Max Verstappen by 0.166 seconds. McLaren's Sprint-winning pace did not translate to qualifying — Norris was P4, Piastri P7. Leclerc said Ferrari was "just not fast enough." Bortoleto was disqualified for a technical breach.

Race key events
Antonelli won from pole, beating Norris by 3.264 seconds for his third consecutive victory. The race was shaped by three major incidents: Verstappen spun at Turn 2 on Lap 1 after locking up, dropping to P10; Gasly's Alpine was flipped upside down when Lawson's gearbox failed and his car collected the Alpine on Lap 4, triggering a Safety Car; and Hadjar hit the wall at Turn 14 on the same lap, breaking his suspension. Leclerc received a 20-second penalty for repeated track limits violations and spun on the final lap. Verstappen pitted under the Safety Car for hard tyres but struggled with degradation and received a 5-second penalty for a pit exit breach.

Technical/strategy highlights
McLaren's chassis-level upgrade delivered immediate results. Norris was fast in Sprint Qualifying and dominant in the Sprint, and Oscar Piastri's second place in the sister car confirmed the improvement is team-wide. Red Bull's updates "almost halved the gap to the frontrunners" according to Verstappen, moving the team from the midfield into a genuine top-five fight. Ferrari's "upside-down rear wing" concept did not deliver the qualifying advantage the team had anticipated, with Leclerc — who topped FP1 — unable to convert that pace into a front-row Sprint start.
Post-race and impact
Antonelli's third consecutive victory extends his drivers' championship lead to 20 points over Russell. McLaren's double podium keeps them in the constructors' fight, while Verstappen's recovery to P5 despite the Lap 1 spin and penalty shows Red Bull's race pace is genuine. Ferrari's difficult weekend — Leclerc penalised, Hamilton in "no man's land" — leaves the Scuderia searching for answers before Canada. Russell called the weekend "clearly an outlier," suggesting Mercedes' internal gap is not as large as the 43-second margin to Antonelli implied.
